[From Acknowledgments] This is the second edition of a small book originally written by the same authors in 1992 on the occasion of Cypress Lawn's centennial celebration. That book, both a history and a guide, generated considerable public excitement for this historic cemetery and genuine curiosity about the notable people buried in it. Indeed, no other cemetery west of the Mississippi River is the permanent address for as many historically significant, genuinely influential, and interesting people. Since 1992, there have been numerous requests for more information not only about these people but also about many of the extraordinary funerary monuments that adorn the grounds. Rightfully so, there is probably more fine art at Cypress Lawn than can be found in many art museums. [From back cover] During the twilight years of the nineteenth century, Civil War veteran and financier Hamden Noble surveyed San Francisco's rapidly deteriorating graveyards and vowed to build a superior and permanent repository for the city's honored dead. His creation, Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, opened in the summer of 1892. Since then, Cypress Lawn has become a virtual pantheon of California pioneers. Other burial places pale by comparison. Beneath each marker is another unique story. Each permanent resident is, indeed, a pillar of the past.
