[From Introduction] Percussion for Musicians was written for the student, educator and professional musician who is in of a practical text in the field of percussion. While the book contains the necessary descriptions contained in most percussion texts, a wealth of concepts not found in other single volumes has been included. Information on how to develop sound, how to repair, what equipment to buy, where to purchase, available recordings, repertoire, the American and Swiss rudiments teaching the beginner, the drum set player and how to perform on all the standard percussion instruments has been included. Etudes have been written to develop musicianship, technique and sight-reading ability on snare mallets and timpani. While many fine available texts begin by teaching elementary rhythmic notation, this volume is offering rather complex rhythmic material, that is within the technical limitations of the non-percussion playing musician. Elementary rhythmic notation is a necessity for the beginning musician. but the approach does seem a bit repetitions for those already acquainted with the fundamentals. A short etude to introduce graphic notation has also been included. The etudes contained in the first section of the book may be played on any non-pitched percussion instrument from snare drum to tambourine. Bass drum and cymbal parts have been added when practical to give ensemble opportunity. While a conscious effort has been made to introduce the important aspects of percussion, it seems impossible to include everything. The author has regretfully had to omit other material which may have been helpful to certain users. To those with more specific interests the selected bibliography and discography may offer a further source.
