He wants to become a great artist, but as an apprentice, he must first learn the fundamentals of painting, starting with the materials painters use. He learns to make brushes, prepare pigments, and mix plaster. But his most exciting assignment is helping Uncle Charbone prepare twenty-two frescoes on the life of Christ for the Chapel of San Francesco. As Antonio works on the different steps of fresco painting, he is challenged by making the walls of the chapel come to life. The frescoes are born in the morning, when the plaster is laid, and die at night when it dries. Antonio is proud of the frescoes he has helped create for the people of Florence. He has learned that it requires skill as well as hard work to be a great painter.
