Catalogue of the first one-man exhibition in the United States of the German Surrealist Richard Oelze (1900-1980), seventeen paintings and three drawings from 1935 to 1972, shown at Spencer A. Samuels & Company, New York. It includes Expectation (1935-36), lent by the Museum of Modern Art. Barr's essay "Oelze, 1936, and His Expectation," written in 1964 for the Kestner-Gesellschaft retrospective, recalls visiting Oelze's Paris studio on Paul Eluard's suggestion while assembling Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism for MoMA. Samuels' foreword traces Oelze from the Weimar Bauhaus under Itten to the Paris Surrealists and the forest imagery of his later work at Worpswede. Also includes a chronology, bibliography, list of museum collections, and a full catalogue with dimensions, exhibition histories and lenders, chiefly the Hamburg collectors Siegfried Poppe and Klaus Hegewisch.
