A study of colonial cabinetmaking in Williamsburg and eastern Virginia by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's curator of furniture, completing a joint project with the Virginia Museum that began with the 1978 exhibition Furniture of Eastern Virginia: The Product of Mind and Hand. It catalogues 126 pieces with woods, measurements, provenance and owners. Part I attributes Williamsburg furniture to individual shops, including Peter Scott and the Anthony Hay shop under Hay, Benjamin Bucktrout and Edmund Dickinson, with chapters on ceremonial chairs and the Hay shop excavation. Part II surveys Norfolk, southeast Virginia, Richmond, Fredericksburg and the Eastern Shore. Includes maps of documented patronage for the four major Williamsburg makers and the Masonic Master's chair stamped by Bucktrout. This is the original 1979 Virginia Museum issue; Colonial Williamsburg reprinted the book in 1993.
