Laid in: exhibition checklist, a single sheet folded into three panels, with the exhibition itinerary printed on the reverse. Catalog for a traveling exhibition of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century California painting from the Oakland collection of James L. Coran and Walter A. Nelson-Rees. On October 20, 1991, less than two months before the show opened at the Palm Springs Desert Museum, the Oakland hills fire destroyed the collectors' entire collection; the book documents 47 of the lost paintings that had been chosen for the exhibition. Each artist has a biography by Iona M. Chelette facing a color plate, among them Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, William Hahn, Theodore Wores, Gunnar Widforss, William Wendt, Granville Redmond, Gottardo Piazzoni and Lillie May Nicholson, with essays by Katherine Plake Hough and Will South on the grand landscape and genre traditions. The laid-in checklist lists the paintings shown on the five-venue tour (Palm Springs, Ventura, the Rockwell Museum in Corning, Shreveport and Oshkosh, 1991-1993), with lenders including the Oakland Museum and several galleries. Contents: Foreword (Fritz A. Frauchiger); Collectors' Comments (James L. Coran and Walter A. Nelson-Rees); Acknowledgments (Katherine Plake Hough); California Grandeur and Genre (Katherine Plake Hough); Distinctions Between Grandeur and Genre (Will South); Artists Biographies (Iona M. Chelette); Artists Index; Board of Trustees
