Biography of John Woolman (1720-1772), the Mount Holly, New Jersey tailor, Quaker minister and early anti-slavery voice, written for general readers and following the chronology of his Journal. Covers his refusal to write bills of sale for slaves, his 1763 journey to the Delaware at Wyalusing, his concern for animals and for simple, ethical consumption, and his final walking journey through England in 1772, ending with his death and burial in York. Illustrations include maps of Penn's Pennsylvania and New Jersey and of the English journey, Woolman's Mount Holly house, Hertford and York meeting houses, and his gravestone in the Bishophill burial ground. Front cover reproduces "John Woolman and the slave," after H. Williamson in A Quaker Calendar for 1914; rear cover reproduces a panel of the Quaker Tapestry at Kendal. David Sox (1936-2016), born in North Carolina, was both an Anglican priest and a Quaker, a former minor canon of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and a longtime teacher at the American School in London.
