Four pieces by the Chicago businessman and humorist, author of "Shakespeare's Insomnia, and the Causes Thereof." About half the book is "Dante's Boodling," a mock-scholarly study of the 1302 Florentine decrees convicting Dante of barratry (Latin text given in an appendix), turned into satire of Chicago's own unbanished boodlers: Powers, Madden, Cullerton, "Bath House" Coughlin and Yerkes. Also includes a send-up of Browning's methods by way of his poem "Ivan Ivanovitch"; "Lines to Lake Geneva," verse attributed to soap and lard manufacturer Nathaniel K. Fairbank, set to music by Frederick W. Root, ending with a stanza on the Board of Trade and "Fairy" soap; and Head's address at the unveiling of the Haymarket police monument, May 30, 1889, naming the officers killed in the 1886 bombing. Contents: Dante's Boodling, and its Influence upon his Work; Some Methods of Browning, as Illustrated by the Poem of Ivan Ivanovitch; Lines to Lake Geneva; Address Delivered at the Unveiling of the Haymarket Monument.
