Geography reader written as a fictional journey: Alice Earle travels with her parents by Pullman car from Chicago to San Francisco and by steamer to Honolulu, then tours Oahu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai. Krout, Chicago Inter-Ocean correspondent in Hawaii during the 1893 revolution and author of "Hawaii and a Revolution," writes in her preface that the book draws on two actual visits and that the Kilauea chapter was written from notes taken within sight of the crater; the preface presents the book as a way for American schoolchildren to learn about islands newly part of the United States. Map of the Hawaiian Islands includes an inset of Pearl River Harbor and vicinity of Honolulu.
