Behnke's systematic account of the native trout of western North America (cutthroat, rainbow and redband, Gila and Apache, and Mexican trouts), with typical characters, distribution, life history, status and taxonomic notes for each subspecies. In the preface Behnke traces the work to a 1957 collecting trip from California to Alaska with Paul R. Needham, and describes this monograph as the revised and updated version of his 1979 "Monograph of the native trouts of the genus Salmo of western North America," prepared for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and an unpublished 1981 revision. This edition adopts the transfer of western trout from Salmo to Oncorhynchus and of rainbow trout to O. mykiss. The epilogue argues for preserving trout diversity at the subspecies and population level. The finespotted Snake River cutthroat, listed here as an unnamed subspecies, was named Oncorhynchus clarki behnkei in his honor in 1995. Behnke (1929-2013) taught fishery biology at Colorado State University and wrote a column for Trout magazine for more than 25 years. Contents: Part I, Relationships, History, and Biology; Part II, Cutthroat Trout; Part III, Rainbow Trout; Part IV, Southwestern Trout; Part V, Epilogue: Preservation of Trout Diversity; Bibliography; Glossary; Index; Color Plates.
