Photographic account of Seventh-day Adventist medical and mission work in Australian-administered Papua and New Guinea in the 1960s, by the Australian photographer and filmmaker Eric Were (1914-1997). Were flew with missionary-pilots Len Barnard, the church's first mission pilot, and Colin Winch from Highlands airstrips such as Laiagam and Lake Kopiago, and travelled the Sepik River with nurses aboard the mission houseboat Pathfinder. Photographs show Mount Hagen dancers in full regalia, Highlands villages and stockades, open-air clinics, infant immunization, cooperative markets and mission launches. Were first photographed New Guinea in 1946 while working on a gold-mining project in the Upper Ramu; he later produced films for the church in more than seventy countries, including Cry of New Guinea. Contents: Introduction; Wings Over the Jungle; The Land That Time Forgot; Out of the Shadows; Men of the Wilderness; Operation New Life; Angels of the River; Winds of Change; Epilogue.
