First English translation of Soviet anthropologist Georgii Frantsevich Debets's study of the human remains from the Ipiutak and Tigara burial sites at Point Hope, Alaska. Debets examined the skeletal collection excavated by Froelich Rainey and Helge Larsen during two months at the American Museum of Natural History as an exchange scholar in 1957-1958; his work, left unfinished at his death and published in Moscow in 1986, is described by the translator as "the only in-depth study made on the Point Hope remains." Includes the editors' introduction by M. S. Velikanova and I. M. Zolotareva, Debets's discussion of Eskimo origins and the "Greenland" and "Bering Sea" types, references, plates of male and female crania, and tables of cranial and long-bone measurements and blood-group distributions. Produced under the National Park Service's Shared Beringian Heritage Program, which the laid-in letter describes as "a preamble to the eventual establishment of the Beringian Heritage International Park.
