Third volume in the Architectural Monographs series from Academy Editions, London, issued in the United States by Rizzoli, devoted to the Scottish architect James Gowan (1923-2015). Fred Scott's essay "The Architecture of James Gowan" is followed by Gowan's own memoir of teaching at the Architectural Association and a survey of his buildings and projects from 1955 to 1977, grouped as houses, flats, specialised residential buildings, and educational and industrial buildings. Includes the work of the Stirling and Gowan partnership (1956-1963), among it the flats at Ham Common and the Leicester University Engineering Building, along with Gowan's later independent work: the Schreiber House and its domed swimming pool in Hampstead, housing at Trafalgar Road, Greenwich, and at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, and color mechanical sections for East Hanningfield. Also includes the Churchill College competition entry with an extract from Colin Rowe's "The Blenheim of the Welfare State," a chronological list of buildings and projects, and a bibliography.
