In Very Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Tan cloth boards with gilt lettering on blue labels on front and spine, Anchor device stamped on front and spine. Mild shelf and edge wear to covers, with some toning along edges and spine and mild soiling. Binding tight. Endpapers mildly toned with some light soiling, small spot at foot of front and rear free endpapers. Otherwise unmarked. Pictorial turquoise dust jacket reproducing Alberto Giacometti's bronze City Square (1948), jacket design by Remy Charlip, not price clipped ($5.00); several chips and tears of 1 inch or less, including a 3/4-inch semicircular chip at fore edge of front panel and chips along top and bottom edges and at spine ends; mild to moderate toning, heavier to spine and rear panel. Barrett's account of existentialism for American readers: the modern crisis of religion, reason and art, the Hebraic, Greek and Christian roots of the existentialist view, and four chapters on Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre, with appendices on negation and finitude and on existence and the analytic philosophers. The jacket notes Barrett as a former editor of Partisan Review and associate professor of philosophy at New York University, and his pamphlet What Is Existentialism? as its predecessor. Anchor reissued it in paperback in 1962, and it has remained in print. Theologian John Macquarrie called it one of the most useful books about existentialism.
