In Good condition, no dust jacket. Green ribbed cloth boards with blind-ruled border, gilt lettering on spine. 1-inch split to cloth along front hinge at head of spine and a small 1/4-inch tear to cloth at head of spine; light bumping to edges and mild shelf and edge wear. A few thin cracks to binding, one along front hinge at foot of half-title, but binding still solid and tight. Previous owner's Art Nouveau pictorial bookplate on front free endpaper, printed name struck through, with a later owner's ink signature beneath. Pencil notations at head of half-title and residue from a removed label at foot; date in pencil at foot of title page; pencil number in margin of final advertisement leaf. Mild toning throughout with occasional light spotting, heavier to front and rear blank leaves. Map in Very Good condition, folded into a slit pocket between rear pastedown and board. Otherwise unmarked. Ramsay (1851-1939), Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen and an explorer of the antiquities of Roman Asia Minor from 1880, first gave this material as the Morgan Lectures at Auburn Theological Seminary, New York, in 1894 and the Mansfield College Lectures, Oxford, in 1895. Applying to Acts the canons of historical interpretation he learned "beyond all others from Mommsen," he sets Paul's journeys against the roads, cities and provincial government of the Empire, argues for Luke's authorship and reliability, and makes the case for the South Galatian destination of Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. The book was reissued in many editions and impressions, each stated on the title page.
