In Very Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Brown paper-covered boards, gilt lettering on spine, bumping to fore edge of front board and mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Neat vertical ink lines in margins of several pages beside passages of text, no more than one or two lines each, with no words or highlighting. Otherwise unmarked. Pictorial red dust jacket, not price clipped (35s net); 1.5-inch tear along top edge of front panel at spine, 1-inch chip at top edge of front panel near fore edge, and several smaller chips and tears increasing along edges; mild to moderate shelf and edge wear with some color loss along bottom edge of front panel, edges and spine folds, and mild toning to rear panel. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. History of the Sicilian Mafia from the feudal estates of the interior through Fascism, the Allied landing and separatism, the Giuliano years, and the move into Palermo construction, citrus and heroin, by a journalist and politician born in Villalba, home town of Mafia chief Don Calogero Vizzini. Pantaleone (1911-2002) wrote for the Palermo paper L'Ora and sat in the Sicilian Regional Assembly; he was among the first to document ties between the Mafia and the Christian Democrat party, and was sued for defamation many times over his career. Preface by Carlo Levi on the piazza at Villalba, and a preface to the English edition by historian Denis Mack Smith, who notes that Pantaleone survived several attempts on his life.
