In Very Good condition, no dust jacket, as issued; slipcase not present. Orange-brown cloth boards with blind-stamped Maya medallion on front, gilt lettering on green label and gilt press device on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear, spine faded to tan, light soiling to covers. Binding tight. A few small smudges to margins of a few pages. Otherwise unmarked. Volume Two only of Stephens's 1843 account of his second Yucatan expedition (1841-42) with English artist and architect Frederick Catherwood, edited with an introduction by Victor Wolfgang von Hagen. This volume covers the ruins of Labna, Chunhuhu and Zabacche, the cave of Bolonchen with its ladder descents, Lake Peten, Chichen Itza (with Catherwood's 1841 general plan and a modern plan of the central area), Tulum, Cozumel, Izamal and Ake, and Stephens's argument that the ruined cities were built by the ancestors of the living Maya. Appendices give a Maya manuscript on the history of Yucatan, a memorandum on the ornithology of Yucatan, and Henry Schoolcraft's communication on the Red Hand.
