In Very Good condition with a Good+ dust jacket. Burnt orange cloth boards, gilt lettering on spine, with mild shelf and edge wear and some color loss at corner tips. Some color loss at head and foot of spine. Binding tight. Previous owner's bookplate and ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Pages mildly toned at edges, otherwise clean and unmarked. Illustrated dust jacket reproducing the MARIE STVART octagon panel on front and the Sheffield Portrait on rear, with a few small nicks and tears, creasing along edges and mild overall shelf and edge wear. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. First comprehensive study of Mary Stuart as a needlewoman. Every known piece bearing her cipher or monogram is reproduced, with others attributed to her, drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Scottish Museum, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Hardwick Hall and Oxburgh Hall. Sections cover the French childhood, the Scottish reign and the Lochleven imprisonment, the Chartley inventory, and the Oxburgh hangings worked alongside Bess of Hardwick during the years in English custody. Emblem sources in Gesner, Belon, Paradin and Vinciolo are traced to individual panels, and a keyed diagram identifies every panel of the Marian hanging. Swain was awarded an MBE in 1989 for her work on embroidery and advised the National Trust for Scotland; her other books include Historical Needlework (1970) and Scottish Embroidery, Medieval to Modern (1986).
