Muick in black ink on title page. Pages clean and unmarked. Otherwise unmarked. First book devoted to the native oaks of California, produced by Cachuma Press with the California Oak Foundation and winner of the Benjamin Franklin Award. Treats the 19 oak species of the state flora and the nearly 30 varieties botanists divide them into, the ecology of oak species and the communities they anchor, the wildlife that depends on them, acorn economies and the place of oaks in Native Californian and later California history, and the case for conservation. Sixth chapter is a regional field guide to oak landscapes, with color maps keyed to accessible stands and directions to each. Color photography by Carr Clifton, David Muench, Bill Evarts and others; cartography by Bruce Appleyard. This printing includes a Foreword to the Third Printing by Bruce M. Pavlik, dated October 1994. Muick took her M.S. and Ph.D. at Berkeley in the Department of Forestry and Resource Management, with doctoral research on oak regeneration at the Hastings Reservation, and was a founding board member of the California Oak Foundation.
