Ethnobotany of the Great Basin and northern California, drawn from ten years of fieldwork on stock-poisoning plants for the United States Indian Service in the Rocky Mountain area and over fifty years of residence in Mendocino County. Murphey gathered plant knowledge from the Paiutes of Pyramid Lake, Walker River and Fort McDermitt, five groups of Shoshones in Nevada, the Bannocks of Idaho, the Washoes, the Utes, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and the Papagos of Arizona. Dictionary of Plant Names lists common, Indian and botanical names in parallel columns with tribal attributions, spelling the Indian names phonetically. Photographs include the first Wild Flower Show at Carson Indian School, Stewart, Nevada, 1935, and a portrait of the author. Printed endpapers reproduce a Warm Springs, Oregon moon calendar and an animated map of Utah made by students of the Uintah Indian School, Whiterocks, 1944. In this Historical Society printing the plant-name dictionary was edited to current nomenclature by Walter Knight of the East Bay Regional Park District, and indexes of common and scientific names were added; the original text is otherwise unchanged.
