Condition & notes
In Very Good condition. Black-and-white pictorial paper covers with blue lettering on front and spine, light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, a bit of sticker residue at lower corner of rear cover. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Local-history columns written by Ralph L. Hughes for Del Norte County newspapers before his death in 1980, collected by his surviving brothers and sisters. Hughes was born at Requa at the mouth of the Klamath, eldest of twelve children, and gave up a scholarship to work in the family lumber mill. Subjects are the lower Klamath and the coast: canneries, ferries, shipwrecks, shake mills and shipbuilding, the salmon runs, the 1955 and 1964 floods that destroyed Saffords Island, Crescent City's early years, Hiouchi and Smith River, and the county's Boy Scout troops.
