Condition & notes
In Very Good condition. Blue paper covers printed in black, front cover with hand-lettered title in decorated capitals inside a full border of drawn food and feast vignettes. Fine lines and scuffing to the acetate on both covers. Mild shelf and edge wear. Comb binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Recipe collection for feast and household use in Vulkanfeldt, the Society for Creative Anachronism branch covering Yakima County, Washington. The group formed in 1980 and took its name from the eruption of Mount St. Helens that year; still a shire when this was printed, raised to a barony in 2005. The foreword disclaims any attempt at authentic medieval cuisine: recipes use period ingredients but are written to be followed easily and to suit palates that would not venture into the more exotic examples. A great many come from the Betty Crocker International Cookbook, the rest from the kitchens of Vulkanfeldt citizens and noted as such. Arranged by course, indexed by nationality from Afghani and Arabic through Flemish, Indian, Jewish, Roman, Scottish, Spanish, Turkish and Tuscan. Tuscan chicken rolls with pork stuffing, Polish chicken with dill sauce, paella, cock-a-leekie and oat stuffing for poultry, Finnan haddie, Arabic dorma and honeyed carrots, German-style red cabbage, Turkish cracked wheat pilaf, clafouti, challah, honey cake with lemon sugar. Recipes from members' kitchens carry the line "From the Pot of" with the contributor's Society name. The editor received her Award of Arms in July 1992, the year of publication, later the Goutte de Sang, and is named on An Tir's Scroll of Honor; the contributor of the red cabbage had held her Award of Arms since 1985 and registered a device with the College of Arms in 1989. Contents: Foreword; Poultry; Seafood; Meat; Pasta; Eggs; Vegetables; Bread; Sweets; Index.
