In Good condition. Black pictorial paper covers (the tree on front, a row of gym lockers on rear) with moderate shelf wear, creasing, and color loss along spine and edges. Staples holding. Faint water stain at upper corner of covers and every leaf, with light tide marks at the margins of a few spreads. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Photographic companion to the novel, produced at the school where Knowles (class of 1945) set it as "Devon." Thomas Hinkle, then an instructor in English and film at Exeter, chose the excerpts and paired each with Bradford Herzog's photographs of the campus and town as they stood around 1970: the Academy Building doorway, the marble stairs, a morning assembly, the ivy-covered dormitories, Gilman Street, the pool, a dormitory room, a football game, the river, the stadium in snow, and the pines at the edge of the Fields Beyond. Designed by Paul Sadler Jr., with suggestions from Richard Niebling. Hinkle's foreword sets out the intent: not to reconstruct the Exeter of 1945 but to show that the boys' world the novel describes had not changed. Issued two years before the Paramount film was shot on the same grounds. The Academy's library cites it as Phillips Exeter Academy Press, 1970; no publisher or date is printed in the book.
