In Good condition, no dust jacket. Black textured faux-leather boards, gilt lettering and Laterza device on front, gilt lettering on spine; light scuffing to front board, mild shelf wear with rubbing at spine ends and corners. Spine with a few thin cracks and lightly shaken, binding still holding. Endpapers toned at gutter. Pages clean and unmarked. Photographic history of Bari from the late 1800s to the 1930s by the city's leading folklorist and dialect scholar (1907-1995), founder of the Archivio delle Tradizioni Popolari Baresi, the first of the subscription photobooks he made with the Laterza brothers, followed by Bari la zita me in 1981. Vintage photographs and postcards gathered from family archives, with long captions in Italian and Barese naming the streets, shops, and people in each view: fishing boats at N-derr'a la lanze before the Teatro Margherita was built, the Odegitria procession, Piazza Massari, the Marchese Romanazzi's four-in-hand, the railway station in the 1860s-90s, a wedding carriage on Via Cavour, street vendors of cheese and poultry, a pilgrim at the passage of San Nicola's statue, a puppet theater in the future Piazza Nitti-Valentini. Chapters on the founding of the Borgo Nuovo under Murat, Carnival, the rivalry of the rioni, the fish market at Piazza del Ferrarese, the Teatro del Sedile and the Colonna della Giustizia, the coming of the railway in 1865, and the 1922 San Silvestro marathon, with portraits of local characters like the beggar Geseppe u ssceme. Forewords by the Rector of the University of Bari and the city's assessor for cultural heritage; a three-page subscriber roll includes subscribers in Los Angeles, Auckland, Luxembourg, and Rome.
