In Very Good condition. Cream paper covers with black lettering and the Guild's calligraphic oval device on front, light soiling and scattered small spots, mild shelf wear with light rubbing at lower corners; small ink mark at upper right of rear cover. Staple bound, staples intact. Pages lightly toned, otherwise unmarked. Laid in: an original photographic print of a tall cylindrical vase engraved with columns of Chinese characters and an English inscription; photographer's stamp of Edward Leigh, F.I.I.P., F.R.P.S., Derby Road, Cambridge, and negative number in ink on verso, with a pencil mark. The vase is not among the pieces illustrated in the catalogue. Catalogue of the Guild of Glass Engravers' exhibition mounted for the City of London Festival in Wren's church of St. Lawrence Jewry, 7-19 July 1980, sponsored by the stockbrokers Grieveson, Grant and Co. Introduction by Laurence Whistler, President, and Len Connor, Chairman, gives the Guild's position five years after its founding: an engraving membership of over 400 and a revival of freelance point and wheel engraving in Britain with no parallel abroad. One page per two engravers, each with a biographical note, technique, commissions, and a photograph of a piece: Elly Eliades Stai (who founded the Guild with Elaine Freed in 1975), Mary Stevens, Bryant Fedden (engraved windows for Bristol Cathedral), P. M. David, Michael Fairbairn, Shirley Palmer, Jo Birrell, Peter Dreiser, Frans G. A. M. Smit, Anne Cotton, Madeleine Dinkel, the Hon. Andrew Lawson-Johnston, Hilary Virgo, David Peace MBE (first Chairman of the Guild 1975-79), James Denison-Pender, Jane Webster, Simon Whistler, Jennifer Conway, Stephen Rickard, Betty Berkeley, Anne Mieke Lumsden, and Laurence Whistler CBE, whose note records that he began engraving glass in 1935 "which may have started its revival in this country."
