In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial covers (sepia view of Avalon harbor) with light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, a few faint scuffs to rear cover, mild shelf wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. The Catalina Island Museum's second volume with Arcadia, narrowed from a planned air-and-sea history to water transportation alone once the curator found how much steamship material the archive held. Pedersen, the museum's curator, worked from the collection and from interviews with longtime islanders, among them Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner, granddaughter of William Wrigley Jr., and Doug Bombard, once a driver of the Miss Catalina speedboats and later founder of Catalina Express. Seven chapters run from Gabrielino plank canoes and George Shatto's 1887 resort through the Banning brothers' steamers, the SS Avalon and the SS Catalina (the Great White Steamer), the ocean crossing as an experience in itself, the daily steamer greetings at the Avalon pier, the lean years after the steamers stopped, and the crew boats and jet boats of today. Useful for Los Angeles harbor and coastal steamship history as much as for Catalina itself.
