In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Dark brown paper over boards with red trim, white rear board. Mild shelf wear with rubbing and some color loss along the top and bottom edges of front cover and down the spine edge, and a hint of fading to spine. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Ten essays from a research conference held at the University of Kansas in October 1983, in conjunction with the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each takes up one modern Indian reader of the Gita and asks what that reading did for him: Tilak on karmayoga, Aurobindo as Gita-yogin, Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave, Vivekananda, Radhakrishnan, Sivananda, Bhaktivedanta, Bankim Chandra Chatterji, and the Theosophists. Minor's introduction and conclusion set out the common ground, that a text known mainly to a spiritual elite before the nineteenth century became the touchstone against which Indian thinkers defined and defended their own traditions.
