Esteban Vicente (1903-2001) was born in Segovia, emigrated to New York in 1936, and became one of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists and a founding member of the New York Studio School. Late paintings, 1993 to 1999, from his last working decade at Bridgehampton. Christina Kee's essay By Natural Light sets them against Vicente's New York School contemporaries, arguing his atmospheric fields moved away from the body-based solidity of de Kooning and the object-like surfaces of Noland and Louis. Vincent Katz contributes Ode to Sun, a poem written in response to the late work. With a full plate list and a list of public collections.
