Condition & notes

In good condition. Illustrated covers, the cover painting continuing across front and back panels, show mild shelf wear with light bumping to edges and a vertical crease along each hinge, and scattered surface rub marks to both panels. Binding tight. Hammer prices annotated in ink and pencil beside the estimates throughout, with a few corrections and notes. Laid in are the publisher's pink prices-realized sheets covering three consecutive October 1989 Butterfield's sales: Continental Prints and Paintings sale 2123K of October 10, Photographs sale 2125M of October 11, and this California Paintings sale 2124P of October 12, the last hand-circled in ink by the original owner. Pages otherwise unmarked. Auction catalogue for Butterfield & Butterfield sale 2124P, volume P50, held October 12, 1989 simultaneously in Los Angeles and San Francisco, lots 3201 to 3472. Each lot carries artist, dates, title, medium, dimensions, provenance and estimate, most with a photographic reproduction. The top price of the sale went to lot 3282, Selden Connor Gile's ALAMEDA WATERFRONT, signed, titled and dated on the stretcher bar "Selden Gile - 27," with Oakland Museum provenance, which brought 46,750 against a 15,000/25,000 estimate. Lots include Fortunato Arriola's PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL WITH SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND ALCATRAZ ISLAND IN DISTANCE (12,100), Giuseppe Cadenasso's THE BATHERS, exhibited at the Helgesen Galleries in 1921 (7,700), Norman Stiles Chamberlain's ADOBE FLORES of 1923 (6,600), Arthur Hill Gilbert's CYPRESS ON THE MONTEREY COAST (8,250), a Lucia K. Mathews exposition subject signed and dated 1915 (7,150), and groups by Franz Bischoff, Percy Gray, Marion Kavanagh Wachtel, Edgar Payne, William Keith and Granville Redmond.
