Condition & notes

In very good condition. Glossy pictorial paper covers show mild shelf wear with light bumping to edges and corners. Glued binding is brittle and beginning to crack, though all leaves are intact and secure. Pages clean and unmarked. Three hundred lots of California and American painting, sold simultaneously in San Francisco and Los Angeles on 8 December 1993. Laid in is Butterfield's printed price list giving the result for every sold lot, including buyer's premium. Top price of the sale was Franz Bischoff's Still Life with White and Pink Roses at $60,250, well over its $25,000 to $35,000 estimate; a second Bischoff, Peonies, inscribed on the reverse Dearborn Mich. 1902, came from the same Alta Loma collection, and four further Bischoff lots follow. Guy Rose's The Blue Pool near Mt. Whitney carried the sale's highest estimate at $70,000 to $90,000 and brought $50,600, offered with a letter from Roy Rose discussing the painting and destined for his forthcoming catalogue raisonne, a Pasadena Art Institute label on the reverse. Cover lot 3563 brought $51,750. Also here are two Albert Bierstadts from the Estate of Marian Mullin Hancock, Antonio Jacobsen's The Bustamante of San Francisco Harbor of 1882, a pair of Aaron Draper Shattuck drawings with certificates of provenance from the artist's granddaughter, Jules Pages's Chinatown, San Francisco, exhibited in "California Design 1910" at the Pasadena Center in 1974, and two Emil Kosa Jr. canvases, one shown at the Art Institute of Chicago's fifty-first annual.
