In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Green-grey cloth boards, yellow lettering on front board, yellow and black lettering on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear with a hint of color loss along edges and at head and foot of spine. Binding tight. Small red stamp to the front free endpaper, an open square without lettering, struck slightly askew. Scattered light foxing to the rear free endpaper and final blank. Mild toning to endpapers. Otherwise unmarked. Riddle wrote from the distribution side of the trade, dating his acknowledgments Tulsa, May 10, 1955, and thanking SKF, New Departure, Fafnir, Marlin-Rockwell, Miniature Precision Bearings, Owatonna Tool and Master Lubricants. His preface is blunt about the gap he meant to fill: bearing engineering had been covered thoroughly by the manufacturers, but no shop manual existed to link the sales counter to the man doing the work. The book is written for the repairman rather than the designer, and the longest chapter is on failures and their causes. It is still cited in engineering papers on bearing fatigue for its accounts of flaking and spalling and of false brinelling from improper mounting. Dedicated to the men and women of the ball bearing industry. Period trade packaging is photographed throughout, cartons date-stamped 1951, Bakelite retainers, New Departure and M-R-C branding.
