Condition & notes

In Very Good condition. Red textured paper wraps, gold foil lettering on front cover beside a die-cut half-heart flap which lifts to reveal Mirette's face on the title page beneath, foil title aligning with the printed title. Light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild shelf wear, light crease to top corner of spine. Staple bound, binding tight. Interior pages clean and unmarked apart from a small black scuff to p. 21. Catalogue for the exhibition held October 2, 1995 to March 22, 1996 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts Library and Research Center, Washington, D.C. Fifty-five books and forty-three original illustrations by eight women illustrators, arranged thematically around kinds of courage. Curated by Krystyna Wasserman, the museum's book arts curator, who over some thirty years assembled NMWA's collection of more than 1,000 artists' books and later wrote The Book as Art (Princeton Architectural Press). Title page reproduces Emily Arnold McCully's watercolor for Mirette on the High Wire, which won the 1993 Caldecott Medal two years before the show. Also represented are Susan Jeffers (1974 Caldecott Honor for Three Jovial Huntsmen), Kinuko Y. Craft (five Society of Illustrators gold medals), Cheryl Hanna (The Story of Stagecoach Mary Fields), Lauren Mills (The Rag Coat), Elaine Wentworth, Betsy James and Anne Buguet. Each artist's section pairs a full-page plate with a synopsis of the story. Catalogue designed by Kevin Osborn of Research & Design Ltd., whose own book works are held by the Museum of Modern Art and the Walker Art Center; foil stamping and diecutting by Artisan II, Alexandria, Virginia.
