In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, blind-stamped publisher's panel at foot, gilt lettering on spine bright. Mild shelf and edge wear, with rubbing at head and foot of spine extending along the lower edge, not touching the gilt. Binding tight. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Faint blue ink offsetting to front free endpaper, illegible, with a corresponding ghost on facing title page. Otherwise unmarked. Volume 181B in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Shaper and Slotter Work (Serial 2222-2, Edition 1), Boring-Mill Work, and Working Chilled Iron. Three trades in one volume: the shaper and the slotter, the short-stroke machines that cut flat, angular and irregular surfaces and the keyways and internal work a planer could not reach, then vertical and horizontal boring mills including the turret-head vertical mill and the cylinder mills of the engine shops, and finally the specialized business of turning, grinding, planing and drilling chilled iron, work that defeated ordinary tool steel and drove the shift to high-speed steel. The Shaper and Slotter Work section here runs to 68 pages and closes with a passage on the hydraulic shaper. The double-page plate in that section is signed at foot BB 181B 2222-2 for the publisher's Bluebook series.
