In acceptable condition, a reading copy. Illustrated wrappers with pre-Columbian Moche pottery motifs. Front cover nearly detached and reattached with tape, including a corner section previously torn away and taped back. Heavy soiling and uniform toning to the brittle covers and text. Page edges chipped and torn throughout. Previous owner's name inked at head of front cover; scattered light pencil underlining. Sewn binding holding. A Peruvian primary-school reader issued by the Marist Brothers (Hermanos Maristas) under their motto Dios, Patria y Hogar and the patronage of the Blessed Marcellin Champagnat, written to teach reading and national pride. It follows two children, Antonio and Maria Rosa Sifuentes Llaguno, on a journey through the regions of Peru (Tumbes, Chiclayo, Lambayeque, Tacna, Cuzco, Cerro de Pasco, Tingo Maria, and the Amazon at Iquitos), weaving geography, folklore, and history into a dialogue-driven narrative. The text opens with Ricardo Palma's poem La Gran Noticia and closes with a glossary and a map of Peru; drawings are by Mariano Zaragueta, with documentary and aerial photographs of 1950s Peru. An uncommon survivor of mid-century Peruvian Catholic education.
