In Acceptable condition, no dust jacket. Signed by the author, Bruno Adriani, in black ink on the half-title. Black paper over boards, gray lettering to front cover and spine; moderate edge and shelf wear, scuffing and staining, mild to moderate overall soiling, a scuffed patch to the rear board where a price sticker was removed, some color loss along the edges. Binding tight. Pages mildly toned with occasional light staining; endpapers toned and stained; rippling to the leaves at the rear of the plate section from old water exposure, without discoloration; light staining about three-quarters of an inch into the lower gutter of a few plates. Complete with all plates.A scarce monograph on the American sculptor Pegot Waring (1908-1983), issued by Nierendorf Editions, the publishing arm of Karl Nierendorf's New York gallery, a leading champion of European modernism in America. Waring worked by direct carving in stone, in the modernist truth-to-materials idiom, and this remains the principal published record of her work; in 1950 she became the first woman granted a one-person exhibition at the Pasadena Art Institute, and she is represented today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Bruno Adriani, the emigre art writer who introduced Waring to pre-Columbian sculpture, contributes the essay, and the plates reproduce works such as Bird, Fish, Reptile, Bat, Baboon, and Bull, several photographed by Edward Weston. Uncommon, and the standard reference on a distinctive mid-century American woman sculptor.
