Swarth (1878-1935), head of mammalogy and ornithology at the California Academy of Sciences, summarizing twenty-five years of fieldwork on the origin, distribution, and post-glacial spread of bird life in coastal Alaska and British Columbia. Prepared at the time of his death and rediscovered in 2019 by his grandson, the scientist Christopher W. Swarth, who edits it here with a foreword by Daniel D. Gibson, contextual essays by Steven Heinl, Philip Unitt, and the editor, excerpts from Swarth's field notes, expedition maps and itineraries, species checklists, a glossary reconciling historic and current bird names, and a bibliography of Swarth's publications.
