Lady Sale, wife of General Sir Robert Sale, kept this journal through the 1841 uprising at Kabul, the catastrophic winter retreat of 1842 in which the British column was destroyed in the passes, and her nine months as a hostage of Akbar Khan. Published within months of her rescue, it remains the most famous firsthand account of the First Anglo-Afghan War. Includes vocabulary of Anglo-Indian and Afghan terms, introduction, and addenda with notes recovered from the retreat.
