In Very Good condition. Pale yellow paper covers with ornate brown calligraphic lettering on the front; "The Apollo, A Stoll Moss Theatre" at the foot. Light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild shelf wear with some toning. "1988" written in ink in the lower right corner of the front cover. Binding tight and staple bound. An original Apollo Theatre Dress Circle ticket stub (E22) is affixed to an interior page near the Apollo Theatre history article. Pages lightly toned. Otherwise unmarked.Souvenir program for the original West End production of Hugh Whitemore's epistolary play "The Best of Friends," which premiered at the Apollo Theatre on 28 January 1988, directed by James Roose-Evans and produced by Michael Redington. The play dramatizes the twenty-five-year correspondence among Sir Sydney Cockerell (director of the Fitzwilliam Museum), George Bernard Shaw, and Dame Laurentia McLachlan (Abbess of Stanbrook). The cast: John Gielgud as Cockerell, Ray McAnally as Shaw, and Rosemary Harris as Dame Laurentia. Designed by Julia Trevelyan Oman, with lighting by Mick Hughes and sound by Peter Still. Includes Sheridan Morley's feature "John Gielgud at 83," biographical pieces on Whitemore, Roose-Evans, Trevelyan Oman, and McAnally, photographs of Stanbrook Abbey, Shaw's Corner, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, and Morley's theatre quiz.
