In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial paperback covers (cover image a detail of Peter Paul Rubens' Prometheus Bound, the Museum's no. 91) with mild shelf wear and light bumping to the corners. Binding is tight. Pages clean and unmarked. A comprehensive catalogue of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Northern European paintings collection from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century, the second installment in the Museum's ongoing program to publish its permanent collection in depth (following Richard Dorment's 1986 British Painting volume). Compiled over a decade by Peter C. Sutton, then Mrs. Russell W. Baker Curator of European Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (formerly Associate Curator of European Painting at the PMA), the catalogue presents more than 150 Dutch, Flemish, German, and other Northern European works ranging from sixteenth-century Mannerists through Steen, Rubens, Maes, Van der Helst, and Van den Eeckhout to Mauve and Van Gogh. Each entry includes provenance, exhibition history, literature references, condition notes, and extended commentary. Publication was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Getty Grant Program, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the CIGNA Foundation.
