In Good condition, no dust jacket. Tan tweed-textured cloth boards lettered in brown on the spine only ("CHOSEN PAGES from Lu Hsun"), unlettered on the front and rear boards; a quarter-sized stain on the front cover, light bumping to edges, mild shelf wear overall. Binding tight. Pages evenly toned (the cheap mid-century paper has browned throughout) but clean and unmarked, with a few small spots in the text block.The first English-language book-length collection of Lu Hsun (Lu Xun, 1881-1936), founder of modern Chinese vernacular literature. Cameron Associates' Publishers' Note explains that earlier American readers had access only to "odd short stories and essays," and that this selection was issued so American readers could "estimate this most estimable writer," quoting Mao on Lu Hsun as "the generalissimo of the cultural revolution." Cameron describes this as the first volume of a projected selected works (later volumes were never issued). The translator is uncredited in the book. Twenty-two stories, prose poems, and reminiscences are drawn from Lu Hsun's four major collections (Call to Arms, Wandering, Wild Grass, and Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk), including the foundational A Madman's Diary and The True Story of Ah Q.
