In Very Good condition. Olive green paper covers feature the artist's brush-and-ink lion on the front and hornbill on the rear; mild shelf wear with light surface marks to the covers and a touch of bumping at the corners. Binding tight. Otherwise unmarked.A working artist's sketchbook from a 2008 safari in Kenya, self-published the same year by The Studio of David G. Derrick. The journey runs chronologically from Nairobi out to Amboseli, the Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Sweetwaters, Samburu, and Mount Kenya, with the artist drawing directly from life in pen, watercolor, and wash. Subjects include Maasai cattle herders, Kikuyu dancers at Thompson Falls, lions resting and on the move, jackals, cheetahs, an agama on a hippo skull, and a male lion that Derrick later modeled in sculpting wax in the field; that wax sculpture is photographed across a double-page spread late in the book. A short artist's letter and a hand-drawn route map open the volume.David G. Derrick Jr. studied fine art at the University of Utah and CalArts and was working in visual development at DreamWorks Feature Animation at the time of publication. The book is artist-published in a square 21-cm format on olive-toned and white papers, with the entire text reproduced from the artist's handwriting.
