Condition & notes

In Good condition. Gray-blue paper covers show mild shelf wear with a few small nicks and light creasing along the edges, some color loss along the edges, and light toning. Binding tight. Pages lightly toned but otherwise unmarked.Compiled and distributed by the Society of Systematic Zoology in the eighth year of the Society's existence (founded 1948, with a charter membership of 543), this 72-page bibliography lists approximately one thousand zoological books then in print, organized first by subject (more than forty categories from Natural History through Philosophy and Literature), then by publisher, with an index to authors. The cover note "With compliments of" and the inside-front-cover statement that the booklet was "available without charge to zoologists, teachers, librarians" mark this as non-commercial scholarly ephemera, not a trade publication. Compiler Ross H. Arnett, Jr. (1919-1999) went on to become one of the most prolific American entomologists of the second half of the twentieth century, author of "American Insects" and dozens of taxonomic reference works. The bibliography preserves a useful cross-section of mid-1950s American zoological publishing, with works by Konrad Lorenz, Rachel Carson, Jacques Cousteau, William Beebe, and the period's leading textbook authors.Contents: Introduction; SSZ book exhibit; Books listed by subject (Natural History; Handbooks; General Biology Texts; Human Biology; Animals; General Zoology Texts; Invertebrates; Protozoa; Coelenterates; Parasitic Worms; Free-living Worms; Arthropods; Arachnids; Insects; Mollusks; Echinoderms; Chordates; Fishes; Amphibians and Reptiles; Birds; Mammals; Anthropology; Anatomy; Human Anatomy; Comparative Anatomy; Embryology; Cytology; Histology; Behavior; Physiology; Biochemistry; Taxonomy; Evolution; Genetics; Ecology; Distribution; Parasitism; Medical Parasitology; Microbiology; Paleontology; Conservation; Economic Zoology; Methods; History; Philosophy; Literature); Books listed by publisher; Index to authors.
