Glossy illustrated paper covers featuring an arrangement of Potter character watercolors (Tom Kitten, Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tailor of Gloucester, and others) framing a black-and-white photograph of Beatrix Potter at her doorway, with a Potter watercolor garden scene on the back; mild surface wear and edge wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked.Auction catalog for the dispersal of Doris Frohnsdorff's three-decade Beatrix Potter collection, sold at Christie's East in New York on Wednesday, 16 April 1997 (Sale 7991, lots 1-311), realizing a total of $699,703 (per the laid-in prices realized sheet). The sale included 178 lots of printed works (early Potter first editions, dust jackets, presentation copies), autograph letters and manuscripts (lots 179-194), Potter family and friends material (lots 195-204) including Rupert Potter's collection of two hundred photographs, piracies and parodies (lots 205-222), Beatrix Potter collectables including Vienna bronzes, calendars, posters, cards, and ephemera (lots 223-295), and original artwork (lots 296-311) featuring Potter's "Three Witches of Birnam Wood" Macbeth illustration (1878), the "Camfield Beauty" rose watercolor (1879), botanical and mycological studies, and the Fawe Park Garden cat watercolor of 1903 reproduced on the back cover.
