In Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Blue cloth boards with silver lettering on spine; light damp staining to top edge of boards, and mild shelf wear and edge wear to covers. Binding tight. Pages mildly toned but otherwise unmarked; heavier toning to endpapers and to the first and last few pages. The dust jacket is pictorial (bold black panel with cream lettering, blue and red accent stripes on a cream ground), designed by Donald Crews; it has a few short nicks and tears (each three-quarters of an inch or less) along edges, with creasing, mild toning, shelf wear, and soiling. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover.[From front jacket flap] This one-volume factual handbook for students and the general reader comprises a history of the Negro American. It is a record of 500 years, and brings together events, ideas, laws, and legislation, as well as literature, that have either been long obscured or left in historical limbo. The arrangement is chronological by year: from 1441, when the Portuguese began the slave trade by importing Africans into Europe, to 1968, when 1702 Negroes held elective or appointive positions in government below the federal level. Short notations about Negro life -- cultural (and historical) events, riots and uprisings, important court decisions, statistics (literature, ideas) -- follow each year's heading. There is also an extensive index for those, say, who do not know that 1829 was the year Robert Alexander Young published his Ethiopian Manifesto but who want to find out something about that pamphlet. But then, how many readers are familiar with Young or William Cooper Nell or Senator B.K. Bruce or the hundreds of others whose names fill this hefty book?
