Condition & notes

In Good condition, no dust jacket. Yellow cloth boards lettered in black to front cover; moderate soiling and rubbing to boards and spine, with heavier soiling along edges, spine and rear cover. Binding firm. Pages toned throughout but otherwise unmarked, with occasional spotting and soiling. A series of poems evoking London neighborhoods of the past (Limehouse, Shadwell, Clapham, Paddington, and others), characteristic of Burke's idealized portrait of the city's working-class and dockland life. A note on the verso of the title page states that a few of the verses originally appeared as chapter headings in an earlier book on London by Burke (published by Duckworth & Co.), reprinted here with permission. This is the American edition, co-published with Grant Richards Ltd. and printed in Britain. Burke lists three earlier titles on the half-title verso: "Limehouse Nights," "Twinkletoes," and "Nights in Town."
