In very good condition. Covers show light shelf wear; binding tight (staple bound); pages have light toning to edges but are otherwise unmarked. [from back cover] Convict Lake, below towering Eastern Sierra peaks, looks serene today. But in 1871, a terrible shootout here between escaped convicts and a posse left several men dead and wounded. September 17, 1871, twenty-nine convicts broke out of the Nevada State Penitentiary at Carson City. Six convicts fled more than 200 miles south into Mono and Inyo counties, California. They pledged to kill any man who got in their way. Cornered at Convict Lake, the convicts killed several posse members, then fled to Bishop. Near Bishop, three convicts were captured, lynched, tried and two hung. George Williams III, author of several Western Americana classics, tells the gruesome story of the convicts' escape and murders based on newspaper accounts of the day. Includes historic photos and illustrations by renowned artist/author, Dave Comstock.
