Robbins Music Corporation, New York. Published date: 1931. Sheet music; illustrated paper covers; 1 score (5 pp, including cover, plus 1 unnumbered page); 31 cm. The publication contains two distinct musical arrangements of the song. Page 2 presents a separate chorus-only arrangement for male quartet (TTBB), arranged by Ed. Smalle, with melody in the second tenor and a piano reduction for rehearsal or accompaniment. Pages 3 through 5 present the standard popular song arrangement for solo voice and piano, with chord diagrams for ukulele, marked Valse tempo (Slow). Illustrated title page in black, white, and yellow featuring a stylized nocturnal landscape of trees, mountains, and moon with a photographic portrait of Kate Smith; illustration credited to Wohlman.

Condition & notes

In good condition. Covers have a 1 inch slit at the bottom of the central fold and a few additional small nicks and short tears along the edges. Music sellers address stamped on the front cover. Covers show overall age toning, scattered creasing, edge wear, and surface scuffing. Interior pages lightly age toned but otherwise clean and unmarked. Popular American song introduced by Kate Smith, known as The Song Bird of the South. Music and lyrics by Kate Smith, Howard E. Johnson, and Harry Woods. Issued during the early 1930s and associated with the American popular ballad and waltz tradition. The score includes publisher advertisements and musical excerpts on page 2 and on the final unnumbered page.
