Reprint of the 1891-1892 edition published by Edward Arnold, London. Maurice H. Hervey, a special correspondent for The Times (London), provides a first-hand account of the Chilean Civil War and the downfall of President Jose Manuel Balmaceda during the revolution of 1891. Based on extensive notes made while in Chile, Hervey's eyewitness narrative combines political analysis with battlefield observation, offering one of the earliest English-language reports on the conflict. The 1979 ISHI edition adds an analytical introduction by Frank N. Manitzas comparing Balmaceda's fall to the 1973 overthrow of Salvador Allende, highlighting the recurring patterns of foreign influence, propaganda, and military intervention in Chilean politics.
