Even though they were acquired in this haphazard manner, during a period of more than a century, they form a representative collection of chair types of the period before 1800... The fiddleback chairs show in an interesting way the use and development of this form. The collection can be criticized for its lack of Windsor chairs. But two specimens give no idea of the infinite variety of this style of chair in which it is rare to find two exactly alike. It is to be regretted that records of the Society are incomplete...
