Written and illustrated by Dorothy Urfer King, the story follows Stevie, who receives a shiny red bicycle from his grandparents. At first, he is too small to ride it. Over the course of the seasons - helping with farm chores, caring for animals, and playing in the snow - Stevie grows taller. On his next birthday, his legs are finally long enough to reach the pedals, and he can ride the little red bicycle at last. The original edition was published in 1953 in Whitman's 900-series numbering. This copy appears to be an early 1960s reprint, identified by its Whitman order number 2543:15, with ":15" denoting the original 15¢ cover price.
